Energy

The Municipal Department 20 - Energy Planning (German) is committed to making the energy supply in our city fit for the future and to advance the energy transition. Our goal is a secure, climate neutral and renewable energy system that remains affordable for all people living in Vienna. With a lot of passion and commitment, as well as extensive expertise, we are initiating and supporting innovative projects, further developing frameworks, creating data and decision-making bases, and continuing to manage the city's strategies and programs in the energy and participation sectors.

Renewable and innovative energy solutions

  • The concept "Phasing Out Gas - Heating and Cooling Vienna 2040" provides an overview of how the decarbonisation in Vienna can work. It shows the most important instruments and tools for heating and cooling residential buildings in Vienna with renewable energy by 2040. This includes technical solutions, legal framework conditions, subsidies and spatial energy planning.
  • The "Solar Energy Handbook" guide shows both state of the art and innovative solutions for more solar energy and greenery on buildings.

Spatial energy planning

  • For the City of Vienna, energy zoning (German) is the way to create an effective basis for ensuring that the use of fossil fuels becomes a thing of the past. To decarbonise the urban energy system, a far-reaching and systematic conversion of current energy supply is required. It is essential to optimize existing and planned infrastructure, meet energy demand with renewable energies and waste heat to a greater extent, and promote the use of innovative energy solutions. Hence, with this thematic concept, Vienna is laying a future-oriented foundation for the development and establishment of energy zoning in the city.
  • By 2040, space heating and hot water preparation in buildings in Vienna are to be supplied exclusively from renewable energy sources. The "Vienna Heating Plan 2040" supports this goal by providing guidance for all people living in Vienna.

Energy data

  • The energy map layers for Vienna provide information on energy-related topics. The detailed maps are available free of charge.
  • The animated energy flow chart of the City of Vienna shows how much energy is needed to supply the city, which energy sources the energy comes from and in which areas it is used.
  • Discover Vienna from a new perspective and find pioneering energy solutions in the urban space. The Energy!ahead-App (available in German and English) shows numerous pioneering projects, from the efficient refurbishment of historic buildings to innovative and climate-friendly energy systems in urban development areas.

Energy efficiency

  • The UrbanEnergy Efficiency Programme 2030 (SEP 2030) provides specific targets and instructions for action to continuously improve energy efficiency. It shows that energy can be saved sensibly in all areas. By 2030, per capita consumption is expected to be reduced by 30 percent despite population growth.
